CALGARY, Alberta, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Precision Drilling Trust (PD_u.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), the largest driller of oil and gas wells in Canada, reported a higher third-quarter profit on Thursday, as lower taxes and higher rates offset a decline in new wells. The Calgary-based trust said earnings from continuing operations were C$133.6 million ($119 million), or C$1.06 a unit, for the quarter, up from C$2.4 million, or 2 Canadian cents a unit, in the year-before quarter.
"The quarter was bit better than I expected and margins held steady, which was great," said Kevin Lo, analyst at FirstEnergy Capital in Calgary. "There's some concern over activity in the fourth quarter, utilization rates are marginal but it should pick up in the winter."
The company was expected to post per-unit earnings of 99 Canadian cents, the average forecast of five analysts polled by Reuters Estimates.
The profit increase came even as natural-gas drilling in Western Canada, which accounts more than two-thirds of Precision's business, plunged as gas prices dropped.
The trust drilled 1,606 wells in the quarter, 35 percent fewer than a year earlier, and its rig utilization rate fell to 53.5 percent from 59.5 percent.
Precision's share of the Canadian market also plunged, dropping to 24 percent of wells drilled from 32 percent in the year-earlier quarter and operating days dropped to 11,606 from 12,539.
Precision said the number of new well licenses issued in September was the lowest for that month in four years, hampered by the 40 percent drop in natural gas prices and wet weather.

Eel attack at Stingray City, Grand Cayman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't seen this posted here but wonder if anyone else heard about this accident at Stingray City in Grand Cayman?? Here's the post of Bigdasher at Cruise Critic.com of their experience at Stingray City.... For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone would encourage the Eel to come out to people.... Seems ludicrous.......
Please Read If Going Scuba/snorkling In Grand Cayman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, I am not scaremongering, I wish I had known about the following before we went scuba diving with a reputable company (often mentioned on this board). As this incident will be investigated by the Dept of the Environment, I am not naming the company
I will be as brief as possible.
On our tour, we went snorkeling at the sandbar. Our guide said that he would show us a Moray eel. Which he did. To cut a long story short, guide was then attacked by eel, and substained horrific injuries - and I mean horrific- to his arm. My children inches away from eel. They saw it all happen.
We get guide back onto boat, guide now semi consious. Another guide from another boat comes over, and tells us, that our company is sending a boat out to pick up injured guide. Mutiny ensues....insist that relief guide ( and I don't even know what company he was from) start boat and meet rescuers half way. It was the worst half hour, my group couldn't believe that a coastguard or sea rescue weren't being set out. Guide was in severe pain.
Eventually, meet with "rescue" boat. Guide manhandled over ( again, they were clueless as to how to deal with injury). Boat speeds off. We are left with relief guide, who tells us, we are going to continue with planned tour.
"oh well"...we think, and get on with it as best we can. No choice to stop the tour, and the stingray city visit went ahead, somewhat lackluster.
When I got home, I looked on the internet, to see if there was mention of the attack. There wasn't. To my horror, I found that this wasn't a one-off incident.
Our tour company knew that this eel is dangerous, and has attacked several times before:
http://www.caymannetnews.com/2005/05/837/feeding.shtml
Despite warnings from the Department of the Environment, tour companies are still visiting the area, and feeding this fish.
I now discover that the standard procedure is to call the DoE
Maritime Unit on channel 16 for assistance, but if they do that it becomes
an official incident. What relief guide did was try to keep it
quiet by calling the tour office on a cell phone rather than involve the
emergency services.
I have since found out that in theory it is mandatory for the boat to have qualified first aiders onboard but the locals tend to ignore this. Our guide may have been qualified in first aid, but our boat was sent out with just one guide on it.
This incident was completely avoidable. I have not addressed the issues of shocked children, the fact that this eel was inches from them, the panic that broke out on in the water and on the boat.
Please, please, do not go anywhere near this eel. I am so lucky that my kids weren't attacked. The injuries that it inflicted were incredible.
I have it on the highest authority that there have been
"numerous reports of moray eel attacks in recent weeks but no one
wants to talk to us about them".

Sadness tonight
a close friend lost his father today. I won't post the name to respect their privacy during this time of grief.
I would ask a favor of you who read this blog.
Could you each take a moment and offer a prayer to the diety of your preference for the safe passage of a good man. May he find peace whatever follows.
God bless and keep you each and every one.
For my friend and his family.
God rest and keep your father.
May he find peace everlasting.
I pray he reach heaven,
before the devil knows he's gone.
Thank you all.
Sincerely
Joseph

sunday stock and news
It certainly seems OPEC and the Caribbean Oil Cartel is set to support a 60 dollar per barrel oil price. Does it seem odd Chavez has dropped out of the news lately?
DOHA, Qatar — Oil cartel OPEC decided to cut production by a greater-than-expected 1.2 million barrels a day on Friday, and some members indicated it was open to further cuts.
United Arab Emirates oil minister Mohammed bin Dhaen al-Hamili made the announcement at a news conference after OPEC's oil ministers held an emergency meeting in the capital of Qatar.
"This was a surprise, and gave the market an impression they are serious," said Ken Hasegawa, a broker at Himawari CX in Tokyo.
HONG KONG — China's biggest bank, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, raised $19 billion Friday in the world's biggest initial public offering, pricing its IPO at the top end of expectations, thanks to overwhelming demand.
The stock sale, the first ever for shares to list in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, surpasses the previous record, a $18.4 billion IPO by Japanese mobile phone company NTT DoCoMo Inc. in 1998.
The state-owned bank, called ICBC, priced its Hong Kong offering at 3.07 Hong Kong dollars a share, at the top end of the indicative price range of HK$2.56-HK$3.07 ($0.33-$0.39), Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing an unidentified person familiar with the deal.
At that price, the bank is raising $13.9 billion from the Hong Kong offering.

TOTAL CEO problems
If you invest in energy and oil this tidbit on TOTAL and the oil for food scandal may be of interest. Here is a snip to point the way.
Total executive in bribery probe
The probe relates to the United Nations oil-for-food programme
French oil firm Total says its head of exploration and production, Christophe de Margerie, is being investigated over claims that he paid bribes to win bids.
A French judge has also placed former Total executive Bernard de Combret under investigation.
Total said the allegations centred on deals relating to the United Nations oil-for-food programme in Iraq.
The lawyer for Mr de Margerie, who is due to become Total's chief executive, said the inquiry was "groundless

PANAMA CANAL EXPANSION VOTE SUNDAY 22 OCT.
"No" supporters face a well-funded pro-expansion campaign
Voters in Panama will decide in a referendum on Sunday, October 22, whether they want an expansion of the canal that links the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Panamanian government has urged people to vote in favour of the proposal to build a third set of locks.
Why does the government say it is necessary to expand the Panama Canal?
The current lock system is too small for modern tankers and the biggest cargo vessels. Ships passing through face long waits. The government argues that the project will bring a much-needed boost to the economy, providing thousands of new jobs.
What does the government propose to build?
Two locks complexes, one on the Atlantic and one in the Pacific Ocean. Access channels will be excavated and the existing navigational channels will be widened and deepened.
How will that help?
It will apparently increase capacity. Ships with 12,000 containers will be able to pass through. The present limit is of about 4,000 containers.
Panamanians ponder future of the canal
As Panamanians prepare for Sunday's referendum on a proposal to expand the canal, the BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Panama City sees how the debate is shaping up.
BP
If you happen to be a british participant on this blog then you may have seen this bit of news off the BBC. Seems BP is still getting raked over the coals.
The US Chemical Safety Board (CSB), the federal body which investigates major industrial accidents, has attacked safety standards at UK oil giant BP.
Its findings follow an investigation into the March 2005 blast at BP's Texas City refinery near Houston that killed 15 people and injured 180.
BBC Radio 4's File on 4 has found that the CSB says there were eight previous dangerous incidents at the plant.
BP has refused to comment, saying CSB has yet to issue its final report.
The explosion at the Texas City facility was the worse refinery accident in the US in 20 years.
NORTEL CANADA
there is news out from Nortel on Internet use.
TORONTO — Soaring demand for games, video and music will stretch the Internet to its limits, Canada's Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) says, and it expects service providers will make big investments in its technology to avoid a crunch.
But the telecom equipment giant, still struggling to turn its fortunes round after the tech bubble burst, is treading carefully as it prepares for what it sees as a looming buildout of capacity by telecommunications companies.
Massive overbuild of Internet bandwidth capacity helped lead to the meltdown six years ago, and the company says it doesn't want things to go wrong again.
"It's driven by caution, because none of us want to repeat the mistakes of 1999 to 2001," Nortel's chief technology officer, John Roese, told Reuters in a recent interview.
The mistakes he refers to saw billions of dollars in Nortel losses, as well as tens of thousands of job cuts and a precipitous plunge in its stock price. Nortel stock peaked at more than C$120 a share in 2000. They are worth about C$2.50 a share today.
ETHANOL TRAIN WRECK
you may have noticed on the news that there was a large train wreck friday night.. the key point is that it had a cargo of ethanol on board. Macquarie to buy THAMES WATER
New water profits warning
Simon Fluendy, Financial Mail
22 October 2006
Investors in water companies will next week be given a stark warning that regulators plan to claw back excess profits with an aggressive price review.
Ofwat chairman Philip Fletcher will deliver the threat at a quarterly City briefing on November 1.
The move follows a series of warning shots over the summer, during the sale of Thames Water, about asset prices and debt levels at water firms.
Industry sources say that Ofwat has been growing increasingly concerned over the soaring prices of water company shares.
The deal last week by Australian venture capitalist group Macquarie to buy Thames Water for £8bn has brought concern to a head.

Solomon Islands PM offices raided
By Phil Mercer
BBC News, Sydney
PM Manasseh Sogavare is in dispute with Australia
Australian peacekeepers in the Solomon Islands have raided the office of the country's prime minister looking for evidence in a controversial sex case.
Witnesses say police officers forced their way in after kicking down a door, and seized a fax machine.
The Solomons government is accused by Australia of harbouring a prominent lawyer wanted on child abuse charges.
The raid is likely to further strain relations between Australia and its tiny South Pacific neighbour.

since i believe in the future of digital media and the consumers thirst for more better faster.. i picked up a few shares of SNDK. it is taking over FLSH and SNDK got hammered today by the market.. it may take a while for the consumer to catch on but with xmas coming.. i do believe we can realize a bit of PPS appreciation on SNDK over time. I plan to add to this partial position as SNDK may drop a bit more..

Co says conventional vaccines under development for avian flu typically have required two or more doses in humans, even with novel adjuvants, to produce the immunogenicity levels expected to provide protection. The co had previously demonstrated that two doses of the vaccine candidate provided 100% protection in mice and ferrets against lethal challenges with H5N1 virus. They say a single-dose vaccine regimen could prove beneficial during a pandemic, both in extending vaccine supply to protect a greater number of people, and in achieving protective immune responses as quickly as possible.
Grand Cayman BWI gives up NAT WEST THREE
LONDON, England
The British government rejected pleas Wednesday to block the extradition to the United States of three former NatWest bankers on Enron-related fraud charges involving the sale of a Cayman Islands company.
Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Home Office indicated that the extradition for trial of David Bermingham, Gary Mulgrew and Giles Darby -- the so-called "NatWest Three" -- would go ahead.
Blair told parliament that he understood the trio's concerns and had asked officials to see whether there was any "support or assurance" they could be given over the possibility of them being bailed.
Menzies Campbell, the leader of the smaller opposition Liberal Democrats, had asked Blair "what could be more unfair" than the extradition of the three bankers without evidence under a treaty which had not been ratified by the United States.
The fast-track extradition treaty, introduced after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, has been ratified by London but not by Washington, prompting strong criticisms from human rights campaigners and some British lawmakers.
The NatWest Three's case centered on a challenge to the legal status of the treaty -- but efforts to block their extradition have already failed in Britain's High Court, Britain's court of last instance the House of Lords and the European Court of Human Rights.
They are accused of taking part in a 19-million-dollar fraud over the alleged sale of a Cayman Islands company for less than it was worth. They deny any criminal conduct.
They maintain that, if there is a case against them, it should be tried in England because that is where, at least in part, the alleged offences occurred.
Leading British businessmen and politicians on Wednesday urged Home Secretary John Reid to stop their extradition.
In an open letter to The Daily Telegraph newspaper, they called on him to do so "not to save the NatWest Three, but to correct the mistake of a previous home secretary and preserve Britain's ancient tradition of transparent justice".
But a Home Office spokesman said: "It is not for the home secretary to consider whether it is more appropriate for prosecution for offences to take place in the UK when ordering an individual's extradition request.
"This is a matter for the UK's independent prosecuting authorities. A domestic prosecution will always take precedence over an extradition request."

Lay died Wednesday of a heart attack, US media said.

seems i really know how to pick em today. CAT got hammered.
Crude got hammered with the drillers and oil services. Coal did
not do well either. ACI, BTU but FDG held up a bit better and it has a nice yield. for now. At least we can fill up our cars a bit cheaper.
since i believe in the future of digital media and the consumers thirst for more better faster.. i picked up a few shares of SNDK. it is taking over FLSH and SNDK got hammered today by the market.. it may take a while for the consumer to catch on but with xmas coming.. i do believe we can realize a bit of PPS appreciation on SNDK over time. I plan to add to this partial position as SNDK may drop a bit more..

Energy Partners comments that ATS has extended its tender offer EPL issues statement regarding the results of the tender offer made by ATS: "For the second time, ATS has extended its tender offer with significantly fewer than 1% of EPL's outstanding shares having been tendered. We believe that these results demonstrate our stockholders' continuing support for the recent decisions taken by our Board, including the authorization of a process to explore strategic alternatives to maximize stockholder value, including the possible sale of the Company. We are pleased that our stockholders recognize that our Board's process provides a greater opportunity to maximize stockholder value than ATS inadequate offer. EPL has filed a preliminary consent revocation statement with the SEC in opposition to ATS' efforts to remove EPL's directors and replace them with its handpicked, paid nominees. We believe that ATS' consent solicitation is intended to facilitate a transaction between EPL and ATS at a price the EPL Board has already determined is inadequate and not in the best interests of stockholders."

Divi timeshare owners shocked
Friday, September 15, 2006
Distress felt by employees of Divi Tiara Beach Resort on Cayman Brac, who have suddenly learned that the resort will not reopen after the regular September closure, is extending to Divi Tiara timeshare owners, who have also been left wondering what is happening.
One timeshare owner, Peggy Wilson, who lives in Toronto, Canada, and has been coming to the Brac for over twenty years, was informed by Cayman Net News that the Tiara had been shut down.
She and other owners she is in contact with had not been given any indication of this by the Divi Corporation.
"I have not missed a year at Divi Tiara since 1985, purchasing two weeks of timeshare before a shovel was even put in the ground," she said.
"I've supported Divi Tiara Beach through the good and bad years, through hurricane damage, through numerous re-organizations with management, and watched the dive operation grow from one single crew dive boat to a fleet.
"I've spent weeks in the hotel when timeshares were either under construction or under renovation."
Ms Wilson said that she not only has wonderful friends who come from all over the world to Divi Tiara, she also has cherished friends on the Brac.
"Many of whom have worked at Tiara as employees," she added.
"I am not alone. Along with so many others, we have never abandoned Divi Tiara for another Divi timeshare. This shocking news, with no warning, has left all of us confused and angry."
Ms Wilson added, "Last year, after staying in the hotel for so many years we were thrilled and excited to finally get back into our beautifully renovated units. For me, to find out I may never get to enjoy my timeshare again has left me disappointed and sad."
She told Net News that, from her email correspondence, it was clear that it was not just timeshare owners that were worried, noting that Divi Tiara is the dive operation that many other condominium owners or renters on the Island preferred to use as well.
Ms Wilson has been trying to contact the Divi Corporation lawyer and has said that other timeshare owners can contact her through Net News.
Meanwhile, a joint press release expected from the two ministries that were contacted by Divi Corporation, the Ministry for Tourism and the Ministry with responsibility for District Administration, has not been forthcoming.
Divi Corporation notified staff of the immediate layoff in a letter dated 8 September.
It states: "We have been in contact with the Minister of Tourism and the Leader of Government Business regarding Tiara's closure and are pleased to advise that the Department of Employment Relations (DER) stands ready to assist with your search for other employment."
In a brief conversation on Sunday with Tourism Minister, the Hon Charles Clifford, Net News was told that the Cayman Government had no prior indication of the resort's closing.
If they had known, the Ministers could have sat down with them to discuss the situation, he said. Mr Clifford said that they were still trying to understand what had precipitated the move by Divi and to see what Government could do to address the issues.
He added that a joint press release would be made by both his Ministry and that of the Hon Kurt Tibbetts on Monday, but Net News had not received this by press time.
First Elected Member for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, Julianna O'Connor Connolly noted that Divi had threatened to shut down its operation several times in the past, but they had always been able to discuss this with them and the resort had remained open.
However, this time she thought, "I think it's fairly safe to say that these people intend to shut down permanently."
She said that among the ideas she had had about what to do in this situation, one thought was that the Government should find out the current market value for the Divi property and purchase it.
The hotel could be used as a hotel training school or a place where Government employees and anyone on the Brac for Government business could stay.
What was important was to prevent the property from sitting empty for several years until it became "a white elephant". There should be sufficient funds in the current budget to at least secure the property, said the MLA.
As far as the timeshare situation, Ms O'Connor Connolly said she cannot comprehend how that could not become a liability.

good morning all.
more rain for houston and the GOM coast. continues flash flood warning for texas. Not a bright cheery day.
AMD crushed on earnings and estimated a three dollar drop in the stock price.. INTC seems to be giving them a run for their money..
It is a stock pickers market lately..
a quick peek at the goes east and west satellite feed seems to indicate more rain for the GOM coast. on the large scale there is still a big circulation over the entire gulf extending down into the caribbean. Not a good time to be rocking and rolling on a cruise.. I prefer my water in a glass straight out of a creek branch.
with lower fuel , electricity generation cost and heating oil oversupply, folks should have lot of money for xmas. retailers might, might do well.
i am going shopping on Ebay my own self and (smile) checking walmart for those recently reduced toy prices..
If we have a mild winter as some have predicted then companies like TTI, OII, HLX and good ole todco should be able to get a lot of work done. with the backlog on their work lists they should have good earnings for the next two quarters. hopefully. DD is your own responsibility.
I am sure everyone is busy with earnings so have a great day and a profitable week.
I have found an interesting contrarian indicator for research.. when the television stock ticker is constantly showing a stock i seem to have missed the move.. when the stock drops off the mass media ticker it seems to be time to really start tracking them..
try it with a couple of biggies and let us know in the comments section what you find..
I use a couple like IBM, AAPL, RIG, BTU, FRO, RIO, NEM, just pick one in each sector you like and see what happens..

Reliant, other stadiums threatened; government skeptical
05:41 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 18, 2006
Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- A Web site is claiming that seven NFL football stadiums will be hit with radiological dirty bombs this weekend, but the government on Wednesday expressed doubts about the threat.
The warning, posted Oct. 12, was part of an ongoing Internet conversation titled “New Attack on America Be Afraid.” It mentioned NFL stadiums in New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland, where games are scheduled for this weekend.
The Homeland Security Department alerted authorities and stadium owners in those cities, as well as the NFL, of the Web message but said the threat was being viewed “with strong skepticism.” Officials at the NCAA, which oversees college athletics, said they too had been notified.
Reliant officials learned of the threat Wednesday afternoon.
“We have and continue to maintain a good, working relationship with both local and federal law enforcement agencies, and based on the Department of Homeland Security’s statement; they have judged that there is not a credible threat to the greater Houston area," said Reliant Park President Shea Guinn. "As we do with all of our events at Reliant Park, we are working with our law enforcement officials and DHS to ensure a safe environment for all fans, players and gameday employees. For the safety of the facility, our policy remains that we are not able to disclose any detailed security procedure or information.”
Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was no intelligence that indicated such an attack was imminent, and he said the alert was “out of an abundance of caution.”
“The department strongly encourages the public to continue to go about their plans, including attending events that involve large public gatherings such as football games,” Knocke said.
One in Three Workers Writes Down Computer Passwords, Study Says
Wednesday, October 18, 2006
One in three people write down computer passwords, undermining their security, and companies should look to more advanced methods, including biometrics, to ensure their systems are safe, a new study shows.
A study released on Tuesday by global research firms Nucleus Research and KnowledgeStorm found companies' attempts to tighten IT security by regularly changing passwords and making them more complex by adding numbers as well as letters had no impact on security.
Staff still had a tendency to jot down passwords either on a piece of paper or in a text file on a PC or mobile device.
"This is really a lot like mom and dad buying a great new security system for the house and junior leaving the combination under the door mat," David O'Connell, senior analyst at Nucleus Research.

with stats like these.
This is the largest and most visited of the three islands. It is about 22 miles long and 7 miles wide at its widest point. It is a fairly flat island, the highest elevation being only 60 feet above sea level.
The capital is George Town. Grand Cayman is home to more than 600 banks. It is the fifth largest banking community in the world. On the island, banking is the number one industry with tourism a close second. Approximately 90 churches are registered with most denominations being represented.
In the latest census, the population was about 41,000, of which 22,000 are Caymanian residents and 19,000 expatriates. The ex-pats, as they are referred to, apply for yearly work permits giving them the right to legally work on the Islands.
overall the Cayman Economy is hurting with closures.
Hotel closure concerns Brac community
With 37 losing their jobs on Cayman Brac, through the closure of Divi Tiara Beach Resort, the community is concerned for the economy of the island.
There will be a trickle down effect throughout the community, say residents.
The 71–room hotel’s closure was announced last Friday and staff’s employment terminates on 23 September. Parent Company Divi Resorts announced “economic realities” as reasons for the closure.
“People are very concerned. For a small island for 40 people to be unemployed is scary,” said Trudy Viers, manager of the island’s other hotel, the Brac Reef Beach Resort.
Cayman Brac has a population estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,500 people.
Divi Tiara, having employed 37, had been one of the biggest employers on the island along with the other hotel.
This week, Divi Tiara was like a ghost resort, with rooms boarded up and the doors sandbagged, but this is also because it was scheduled to close for a month anyway, for a maintenance period during slow season.
Some staff members were on property this week discussing their futures and absorbing the news they first heard on Friday, that they were out of jobs.
A few employees have worked at the property for as long as 20 years.
Ron Morin has been there since 1989. He was Food and Beverage manager and is now actively seeking alternative employment. With four children, he will have to return to Canada if he cannot find work.
Craig Burhart, who worked in the dive shop for less than a year, but has been on the Brac for eight years, calls the closure sad.
He does admit that Divi Tiara was right to close if it was not making money. However, he thought staff members would have been written personal letters thanking them for their service, he said, especially those there a long time.
The trickle down effect will be felt, he asserts. With 30 to 40 less tourist divers a week on the island and nearly 40 residents out of work, it would have to, he said.
Retail Supervisor at Marketplace, Gail Esson agrees. The community is concerned with nearly 40 wage packets cut from the economy. Everyone will feel it, she said.
The store will also miss the tourists from the resort, who used to come in and make purchases. “We’re concerned. We expect to see a difference in the coming weeks,” she said, adding that the store occasionally provided produce to Divi Tiara.
Mr. Burhart said people will be displaced because of this closure, notably some of the expatriates.
When asked if she perhaps could accommodate some of the displaced staff at her resort, Manager of the Brac Reef Beach Resort, Ms Viers says she has no plans to expand her staff, but obviously if Caymanians are qualified to do certain jobs filled by expatriates then they will be prioritised.
Commenting on the fact that the parent company of Divi Tiara, Divi Resorts included high prices as reasons for having to close, she acknowledged that like any business in Cayman, a hotel is expensive to run. Increased expense such as electricity, water and insurance make it so. They also cited airlift as a challenge. Flights to other destinations such as Cozumel, are cheaper and so they constantly need to work on attracting people to Cayman Brac, she admitted.
But for the long term the hotel is a big loss, Ms Viers said.
It leaves only 40 hotel rooms on the island, where there had been over 100 between the two.
Todd Grant of Cayman Brac Rental Cars said the unemployment now on the island is the biggest problem in the short term.
General Manager of Divi Tiara Max Hillier said he has not received information yet from the parent company on what the situation is for those who had timeshares at the resort.

USA and CANADA live fire training exercises on the great lakes.. wow.
U.S. Coast Guard to accept Canadian input
TENILLE BONOGUORE
Globe and Mail Update
The U.S. Coast Guard has agreed to accept written submission from Canada regarding its plan to begin live-fire training exercises on the Great Lakes.
Nine public meetings are planned in U.S. communities bordering the Great Lakes.
Canadian consular officials are attending the meetings as observers, but residents in Canadian lake communities called for involvement in the public consultation.
The Coast Guard told The Kingston Whig-Standard this week that written submissions would be accepted and taken into consideration.
The live-fire tests on the Great Lakes were suspended in September after plans to set up 34 practice ranges – one within 40 kilometres of Kingston and 20 kilometres of Wolfe Island – sparked a strong reaction from environmental groups, boating and fishing organizations and municipal officials in both countries.
Concerns include boating safety near the training zones and potential environmental damage from lead in the ammunition.
The Coast Guard plans to conduct two- to four-hour training drills two or three times a year in each zone.

A gasoline tanker ship exploded Tuesday as it was unloading fuel at a port in the Mexican state of Veracruz, killing at least six people and injuring 11 others, officials said.
Four hundred workers were evacuated from the area of the ship, owned by Mexico's national oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex.
The blast occurred at Pemex's Pajarito marine terminal in the city of Coatzacoalcos, Pemex spokesman David Lartundo and civil protection official Daniel Martinez told The Associated Press in separate interviews.
The dead were identified as three Pemex workers and three outside contract workers. The injured were taken to area hospitals.
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica
Several operators of Internet gambling sites in Costa Rica known as "sportsbooks" say their businesses will not be significantly affected by a new U.S. law prohibiting bank and credit card payments to the sites.
U.S. President Bush signed legislation Friday aimed at prohibiting the credit card and electronic fund transactions U.S. players often use to settle online wagers. Some foreign online gambling outfits immediately said they would stop doing business with American customers.
There are at least 200 electronic gambling companies in Costa Rica, employing about 10,000 people, according to the Costa Rican electronic gambling business association.
Bodog.com, founded by Canadian millionaire Calvin Ayre, said in a statement Monday that, "The way we see it, we have a few months to study the situation and put a plan in place to deal with all anticipated outcomes of the new legislation."

A train on Rome's underground metro system rammed into the back of another on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring 236 others, five seriously, authorities said.
"About one quarter of the first carriage of the train I was on was totally crushed," one passenger said.
Officials at the Piazza Vittorio metro station, near the main overground rail terminal in the city center, said there was no indication the accident was related to terrorism.
The accident happened when one train arriving at the station crashed into the back of another that was still discharging passengers.
Prime Minister Romano Prodi told Reuters officials were "still looking into whether it was a human mistake or if something went wrong with the signaling."

U.S. forces patrolled the streets of the predominantly Shiite city of Balad on Tuesday after five days of sectarian slaughter killed 95 people, violence that surged out of control despite the efforts of Iraq's best-trained soldiers.
Iraq's 4th Army took command of the region north of Baghdad a month ago, but had been unable to stem recent attacks in Balad, where the slayings of 17 Shiite Muslim workers on Friday set off revenge killings by Shiites.
Minority Sunnis, who absorbed most of the brutality in the city of 80,000 people, have been fleeing across the Tigris River in small boats, Balad police commander Brig. Nebil al-Beldawi said. On the outskirts of the city, two fuel trucks were attacked and burned.

The United States plans to take in about 10,000 Burundian refugees -- some of whom fled their landlocked central African nation as far back as 1972 -- from Tanzania, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday.
"We are planning to offer permanent re-settlement to a group of Burundian refugees who've been in western camps in Tanzania," State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters, saying an estimated 10,000 people would be offered residence.
Burundi has been plagued by civil strife since it achieved independence from Belgium in 1962. Thousands of Burundians from the Hutu majority fled ethnic massacres by the powerful Tutsi minority in 1972.

now this on top of the damage to hawaiian cocoa farms in earthquake
Cocoa farmers across Ivory Coast went on strike Monday, holding back their crops to protest low retail prices and high export taxes. If the action is sustained it could affect the global chocolate industry.
The West African country is the world's top grower of cocoa beans, producing 40 percent of global output each year, according to government statistics, despite being split following a civil war.
"The strike is on ... we called on the farmers to hoard their beans," Koffi Kanga, a representative of the country's cocoa farmers association, said by telephone from San Pedro, Ivory Coast's second-largest cocoa port after the commercial capital of Abidjan.
The action comes days after authorities officially opened the harvesting season by announcing a retail price of 80 cents a kilogram, roughly 40 cents a pound. Cocoa association President Henri Amouzou said the farmers are seeking $1.15 a kilogram (57 cents per pound).

27-year-old woman was killed by bird flu — Indonesia's third death from the virus in as many days — bringing the nation's toll to 55, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.
The woman from Central Java province died Friday, five days after she developed symptoms of the disease and one day after she was hospitalized, the WHO said in a statement posted on its Web site.
"The source of her exposure is currently under investigation," it said.
According to WHO, of the 72 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 55 have been fatal.
An 11-year-old boy succumbed to the disease in a Jakarta hospital on Saturday and a 67-year-old woman died Sunday in the West Java town of Bandung, Indonesian health officials announced earlier this week.

Indonesia began dumping mud surging from a gas exploration site in central Indonesia into the sea on Monday, hoping to minimize destruction from the disaster that has submerged entire villages and displaced thousands.
The mud flow started after an accident deep in a drilling shaft on the seismically charged island of Java four months ago. It now covers more than 1,100 acres and is being contained by an ever-expanding network of dams.
Despite opposition from environmentalists, the government eventually aims to dump the mud into the sea 20 hours a day, 650 cubic feet per second, said Rudi Novrianto, a government spokesman.
Experts say the mud volcano is one of the largest ever recorded on land. It is believed to come from a reservoir more than three miles underground that has been pressurized by tectonic activity or by the accumulation of hydrocarbon gases.

On Sunday, Philippine troops watched Marines aboard CH-53 helicopters insert a team to capture a high-value individual hiding in a building — a scenario that has been put to use during operations in the southern Philippines.
"What we try to do here is make the training as realistic as possible," said U.S. Marine Sgt. Levi Konz, a Special Operations Training Group instructor.
The exercises, which have been credited with giving Filipino troops a crucial edge in battling militants in the restive south, coincided with three bombings in the region last week, including a blast that killed six people and wounded 29.
On Sunday, a small explosion at a police camp on Jolo island wounded two people, and troops dismantled another explosive device just hours before it was timed to go off.

can banks hold rates.
OTTAWA
The Bank of Canada left interest rates unchanged on Tuesday, as expected, and gave no sign it might cut rates soon, despite a belief that a U.S. slowdown will batter the domestic economy.
While nobody expected the central bank to alter rates, held steady at 4.25 percent since May, many economists thought the bank would place more emphasis on the impact a slowing U.S. economy will have to Canada's exports and growth rates.
Instead it said the risk of a slowdown was "roughly balanced" with the risk of inflation.
"Although the Bank did, indeed, lower its forecast for economic growth, there is not even a whiff of potential rate cuts in its statement," Marc Levesque, chief fixed-income and foreign exchange strategist at TD Securities, said in a note to clients.
As well as cutting growth forecasts, the bank reduced its estimate for how fast the economy can grow without triggering inflation. That means it may tolerate slower growth without feeling the need to cut interest rates in response.
The Canadian dollar fell slightly after the news. At 11:30 a.m. (15:30 GMT), the currency was at C$1.1384 to the U.S. dollar, or 87.84 U.S. cents, down from C$1.1364 to the U.S. dollar, or 87.99 U.S. cents beforehand.
"The Bank of Canada has lowered the bar in terms of where this economy is expected to grow at," said Andrew Pyle, senior economist at Scotia Capital. "And it can grow at a slower rate and still leave the bank with the decision of leaving rates unchanged."
The bank now expects the economy to expand by 2.8 percent this year, down from a previous estimate of 3.2 percent. That is right in line with the new assumption of the potential growth rate, downgraded to 2.8 percent from 3 percent due to lower-than-expected productivity growth.
It pegged next year's growth at 2.5 percent, down from a previous forecast of 2.9 percent.

A strong earthquake struck in the ocean southwest of New Zealand late Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but police said they had no immediate reports of injury or damage. The agency did not mention any tsunami alert.
The quake, which registered magnitude 5.8, struck at 11:35 p.m. (6:35 a.m. EDT), and was located 165 miles west of the uninhabited sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands and 506 miles southwest of the city of Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island, the geological service said. SYDNEY
Australian banking and insurance company Suncorp-Metway Ltd has made a 7.87 billion dollar (5.8 billion US) takeover bid for general insurer Promina Group Ltd.
Promina said its board has indicated to Suncorp that it is favorably disposed to the proposal and is further evaluating the overall transaction.
It would be the biggest deal in Australia's financial services sector since Commonwealth Bank of Australia's 9.6 billion dollar takeover of Colonial Ltd in 2000.
The bid by Suncorp, Australia's third largest general insurance group and sixth largest bank, values Promina at 7.64 dollars a share, 18 percent higher than Wednesday's closing price.
The offer comprises 0.2618 share of Suncorp and 1.80 dollars cash for each Promina share.
Suncorp said in a statement that benefits to the combined group include an expanded national presence and improved geographic diversity, enhanced scale for a national general insurance business, and significantly increased presence in wealth management, in particular the life insurance market.
"Suncorp believes bringing together Suncorp and Promina is a logical combination of two complementary businesses and will provide significant benefits for both Suncorp and Promina shareholders, as well as their employees and customers," it said.

Shares in Macquarie Bank have risen on speculation the acquisitive Australian outfit was preparing a bid for British utilities giant Thames Water.
The speculation, widely reported in British financial news websites, was prompted by Macquarie's sale of South East Water for 665.4 million pounds (1.26 billion US), a move seen as clearing any competition concerns if Macquarie makes a tilt for Thames Water.
Shares in Macquarie Bank rose 12 Australian cents (nine US) or 1.7 percent to 69.24 dollars in trading on the Australian Stock Exchange following the sale to Hastings Diversified Utilities Fund, owned by Australia's Westpac bank.
London-based Thames Water provides water services to some 70 million customers in 46 countries across the globe and is one of the world's largest water services companies, according to its website.
The speculation it is a target for Macquarie, which made an audacious but unsuccessful bid for the London Stock Exchange last year, comes as other Australian players involve themselves in the British water market.
AWG, which owns Anglican Water, said Monday it had agreed to a takeover proposal from a consortium including the Commonwealth Bank's Colonial First State Global Asset Management and Industry Funds Management, an Australian pension fund.
The consortium, Osprey Acquisitions, will pay 2.213 billion pounds (3.272 billion euros, 4.145 billion US dollars) for AWG if the deal goes through.

In regards to a soft rental market, a recent letter to the editor from Paul Aiken and Caymanians are hurting…thanks for the good laugh Paul that felt really good even though it’s been at my expense for the last four years.
Let’s get some facts straight as apparently our real estate gurus don’t understand basic investing (no news there).
When you choose real estate as an investment you shouldn’t expect to realize a 100 per cent return (unless you live in Cayman). So if the landlord puts less than 10 per cent down on the condo the tenant is expected to pay the mortgage, strata and all associated fees?
What rubbish.
So apparently a tenant’s first question to a prospective landlord is “how much do you owe on this place?”
Now in the rest of the world if you purchase a condo and hope to rent it out as an investment you’re doing really well if you’re getting say 75 per cent of your mortgage and hopefully in the long term real estate market you can sell it in 10 years and take advantage of a hopeful increase in market value.
Expats in Cayman have been subject to criminal abuse regarding rents.
Tenants are the ones hurting, and I don’t think you’ll find much sympathy for your silly comments that Cayman landlords are hurting. The criminal gouging that took place (and still does) after the hurricane was just that, criminal, and unfortunately everyone knows of horror gouging stories and I can only recount one case that actually went to court and the tenant won.
Let’s just say that particular landlord that lost in court is very, very wealthy.
So, in the end, yes rents have come down a bit but they are still incredibly high.
My personal rent went up CI$6,000 per year and that’s about average for everyone I know, so no I don’t think Caymanians are hurting; they just can’t do the maths.
But then again I wouldn’t trust anyone who puts their picture on a business card.

U.S. forces patrolled the streets of the predominantly Shiite city of Balad on Tuesday after five days of sectarian slaughter killed 95 people, violence that surged out of control despite the efforts of Iraq's best-trained soldiers.

Analysts and bankers said that without such an option it would be hard to fathom the merits of Citi's 20 percent deal with Akbank, Turkey's second largest private bank by assets and one of the most profitable in the country.
Citigroup, which already has a small banking presence in Turkey, agreed to pay 9.5 lira a share for the stake in Akbank, a 17 percent premium over Tuesday's closing share price.

It said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, with more than 5,000 deaths reported every year in fires, floods and explosions, often blamed on indifference to safety rules or lack of required equipment.

It is believed to come from a reservoir more than three miles underground that has been pressurized by tectonic activity or by the accumulation of hydrocarbon gases.

anyone think it might be time for RDC to get back into the Semi Submersible market.. The sale of the midland was a good deal but it seems the market on Semi's is picking up with really high rates out for the next few years.. just a thought..
Norwegian oilfield services group Seadrill SDRL.OL has won a four-year Gulf of Mexico job for its West Sirius rig worth about $690 million from Devon Energy Corporation DVN.N Seadrill said on Monday.
The West Sirius semi-submersible is now under construction in Singapore and is due for delivery in the second quarter of 2008.
The contract firmed up a preliminary deal that Seadrill had signed with Oklahoma City-based Devon on Sept. 7.
"The contract includes a four-year assignment with the option for the operator to extend the contract to five or six years," Seadrill said in a statement.
Seadrill today confirms that the operator Devon Energy Corporation has signed the long-term contract to utilize the West Sirius in the Gulf of Mexico.
The contract includes a four year assignment with the option for the operator to extend the contract to five or six years. Estimated contract value for the four year period is approximately US$690 million.
West Sirius is currently under construction at the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore and is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter 2008.
I have become quite fascinated with the norwegian oil exchanges over the last few months and find news out of Oslo highly pertinent to many US oil stocks.. it ties together rather nicely and covers a few disclosures you may not see on the US news and exchanges.. takes a Lot of DD to keep up with developements on those overseas exchanges.. kind of like tracking deadly stinging creatures in west texas.. snakes and such ya know.

cayman housing has still not recovered from the hurricane. according to the Cathy Church photo web site they have not even finished restoring the two tiny properties they owned..it is so sad and we should all let them know how bad we feel for them.. the phone and email contacts are on the web site at cathychurch dot com TERRIBLE. but at least the prize dolphins are safe.
The lives of eight hundred families in the Cayman Islands have been restored under the work of the National Recovery Fund (NRF), since the destruction of Hurricane Ivan on 11 September 2004.
The Housing sector was mostly affected costing the economy CI$1.4. Many became victim to the Category five Hurricane, as its strong winds swept through the Islands, leaving 650 homes completely destroyed and about 13,500 affected. That signifies 83 percent of dwellings.
Some of those victims in George Town and Bodden Town were graced by the presence of Government officials and members of the media, on Tuesday, 12 September, during their usual site visit.
Among those present were the Governor, H.E Stuart Jack and his wife, Mariko Jack, Leader of Government Business, Hon. Kurt Tibbets, Minister of Health, Hon. Anthony Eden, Minister of Education, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Charles Clifford, and Executive Director of NRF, Dr. Mark Laskin.
In a written messages presented to members of the Media, Mr Tibbetts noted that over the past years, the Fund has made steady progress, particularly in restoring the lives of those victims.
He added that it has brought comfort and hope to the helpless- the sick, the elderly, the less fortunate and families with young children.
The Leader of Government Business pointed out however that 'the job is not finished', since there are many lives still in shambles as a result of the hurricane. He therefore urged the public to continuing supporting the Fund to assist in the rebuilding process.
The residents visited were 80-year-old Charles Browne of 23 Hardy Street, Bodden Town, whose home received extensive damage from Hurricane Ivan. The roof was completely destroyed, resulting in the collapse of the building.
The homes of 60-year-old Ismerelda Scott of Woodpecker Close, George Town; Angela General and Errol Edward Ramoon of Martin Drive, George Town were also visited.
Ms Scott, who lived with three other family members, is awaiting approval on her application for assistance to construct a new home from the Planning Department.
Mr Ramoon and his mother, Ms Burness, were both assisted by the NRF, with a donation of building material.
Ms General however, has not been so fortunate. The walls of her house are crumbling from damage of sustained winds during the hurricane. Initial attempts have been made to fix the roof, but that proved futile, given the deteriorating condition of the walls.
Ms General's situation requires urgent attention, being an elderly woman, and having young children under a leaking roof and temporary utilities strung from a neighbour's home. But she patiently waits, as plans are underway to have her home rebuilt on a different site.
To date, NRF officials have managed to raise US 10.2 million, primarily from the private sector in the Cayman Islands.
Despite its success, the Fund is yet to assist all those who were affected by the hurricane. More than 200 homes still await repairs.
It is on this basis that Executive Director of NRF, Dr. Mark Laskin, joined with Mr Tibbetts, in calling upon the public for its continued support. This factor cannot be overly emphasised.
"The work continues until many more needy persons are helped. We count on your continued support to finish the job", Dr. Laskin stated.

Mine problems prompt UK Coal loss
UK Coal is developing more surface mines
UK Coal, the country's largest coal producer, has said it will make a loss this year due to production disruptions at several of its mines.
The firm's finances have improved in recent years and it made a £7m profit in the first six months of 2006.
But reduced output at four deep cast mines over the summer will force it into the red for the year as a whole.
The Doncaster-based firm wants to cut its reliance on coal, and got approval for its first wind farm last year.
It is also developing its substantial land assets as part of its plans to diversify its operations.
everyone should know by now that i am interested in NG, LNG and pipelines in general.. this caught my eye and i hope you find it interesting also.
A ceremony to mark the opening of one of the world's longest undersea pipelines was due to be held on Sunday.
The 750-mile Langeled pipeline runs from Norway to Easington, East Yorkshire and will provide 20% of the country's gas by the end of 2007.
The event included a ceremonial handover of a cup of tea brewed using natural gas.
Tony Blair and Jens Stoltenberg, his Norwegian counterpart, will attend a completion ceremony on Monday.
The £1.7bn project has been backed by Centrica and energy giants Statoil, Norsk Hydro, Royal DutchShell and ConocoPhillips.
If you saw the deaths reported over the weekend caused by Dengue fever you must hear this news of Dengue fever in the cayman islands. Please be very careful if you are planning a cruise or flight there..
take all the recommended precautions to avoid the danger.. this was the cayman , caribbean take on the fever exposure. i like publications like the caribbean net news and the local georgetown newspaper. lots of problems in cayman recently and a lot affects certified scuba divers who plan to try to dive cayman any time soon.. as well as the sting ray death of steve irwin.. that will hurt the photo buddy groups like cathy church photo shop located under the sunset house hotel,
maybe we can send good vibes their way. Full Disclosure. I have interests there but plan to sever those TIES just as soon as possible.. just too much risk in the area for now.
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: A case of dengue fever has been confirmed in Grand Cayman, and the Public Health Department, in conjunction with the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH), is currently closely monitoring the situation in the Cayman Islands, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar said.
The Public Health Department also issued an advisory to people travelling to known dengue endemic countries to use a repellent such as Off! as much as possible, wear protective clothing limiting skin exposure, use air conditioning and only open screened windows and doors, and reduce outdoor activities during early dawn and dusk to reduce the risk of being infected.

‘Rainbow’ welcome for gay cruisers in the Cayman Islands
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: Eight years after they were forced to make a detour to avoid the wrath of Caymanians, 3,200 gay tourists landed on Grand Cayman on Tuesday to a “rainbow” type welcome in the traditionally Christian Island.
Passengers from the Navigator of The Seas attract
attention in downtown George Town when they and
some 3,000 fellow gay cruisers disembarked for
the first time in the Cayman Islands for almost a
decade
To greet the visitors in a variety of ways were hundreds of residents who lined the city of George Town streets. They were vocal in one of three ways – “welcome”, “not welcome” and “welcome but…”
When the tenders took the gay cruisers from the Navigator of the Seas, anchored offshore, the long-awaited reaction from Caymanians came in the form of a mixture of warm and cold responses.
The controversial issue, which the Government had to publicly defend on the grounds of human rights and international acceptance of gays, drew a strong presence from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS), including Commissioner Stuart Kernohan.
“We’re very peaceful people but we do have a great part of our public out here and they’re outraged that our Government has allowed this ship to come to our shores,” he said.
The protesters outnumbered the welcome party and their jeers drowned the friendly “hello” from some residents. One protester said, “I’m here to represent Christ. I’m here to tell the people that we don’t love their sins but we love the sinner.”
hard to believe that a country like cayman that has so many protectors of dophin and that spends so much to protect dolphins would have this reaction to human beings of any race creed color or national origin and sexual persuasion.
I wonder how many photographers were on hand that day.

saturday morning. Wow, what a great day yesterday for energy gains.
this is a long post but you may find the info on JDO and BDGR will draw your interest in the oil and gas industry.
=================
PTEN stuff. with news on JDO reducing work, and other news on decreased NG production.. Production. not drilling.. it seems we are entering a period of NG and LNG expansion. i do not run a lot of computer models but smart drillers probably do as do really smart producers.
Cnbc is pumping how much we have right now in storage. Long term , i have not noticed a big DECREASE in drilling, building new pipelines, or expanding LNG ports and storage facilities.. I currently see nothing wrong with buying a few shares of
drillers
pipeliners
storage facilities
while the price of NG is low.
storage levels are reported to be so high.
and LNG/NG companies are so beaten down.
this is our ultra long term view out past the
three year mark extending for 3-10 years. Based on the scheduled completion of projects currently in the works.
ya might want to search up info on the trans texas corridor project for starters.
It just seems to me that a lot of big money is also taking that view or there would not be so much money going into mergers, acquisitions, and new infrastructure.. just a thought..

this is a long post but you may find the info on JDO and BDGR will draw your interest in the oil and gas industry.
=================
PTEN stuff. with news on JDO reducing work, and other news on decreased NG production.. Production. not drilling.. it seems we are entering a period of NG and LNG expansion. i do not run a lot of computer models but smart drillers probably do as do really smart producers.

New Iberia Louisiana. pipeline blast causes NG shut in. on CBS news website. four dead and two missing. no link.
google new iberia pipeline explosion for the CBS link. if a barge hit a pipeline as reported it will take a bit of time to get the needed repairs in place.. happened offshore about 1oo miles from new orleans.

be careful about drinking in cayman. It used to be fun. now it is just expensive.
The RCIPS is warning liquor license holders to make sure they stick to licensing hours after one establishment was found to be selling alcohol after closing time last Saturday.
Officers from the Uniformed Support Group attended the establishment at around 1am and found approximately 15 people drinking within the premises. All were warned for prosecution for consuming liquor on licensed premises after hours. One bartender and the bar manager were also warned for prosecution for selling liquor after the permitted hour.
The RCIPS would like to advise people of the following laws and provisions:
• Under the liquor licensing law 2000 revision, it is an offence for anyone to enter or remain in any bar during prohibited hours. It is also an offence for a licensee or his/her staff to aide and abet anyone to enter or remain in a licensed premises during prohibited hours. It is also an offence for a licensee or his/her staff to dispose of intoxicating liquor to any persons during prohibited hours.
• Whoever is guilty of an offence under the licensing law is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $1,000 and a term of imprisonment of one–year and on a second or subsequent conviction to a fine of $2,000 and a term of imprisonment of two–years.
• It is the duty of every licensee to procure the compliance of his servants, agents and other persons under his control with this law and where such person is guilty of an offence against this law the licensee shall be equally guilty whether the licensee was or was not present at the time of the act or omission constituting such offence.

In Britain recently. Gov is planning to demand home generation of electricity.. a few who should profit..
The Energy Saving Trust, funded by the government and the private sector, says green power generation could supply more than one third of energy needs within a few decades.
About 80,000 homes in Britain are producing electricity with small renewable power generation units such as turbines.
Now turbines have been embraced by mainstream retailers like B&Q, a chain of hardware stores run by Kingfisher Plc, which sells them for 1,500 pounds ($2,800).
Easily attached to your home and can save around a third of your electricity bill. And with energy high on the government's agenda, grants are available to cover up to 30 percent of the installed cost," the store gushed in a statement launching turbines last month.
The Energy Saving Trust, a government agency that coordinates attempts to boost renewable energy production and increase efficiency, estimates domestic wind turbines could supply 4 percent of Britain's electricity requirement and reduce domestic carbon dioxide emissions by 6 percent.
One manufacturer, Futurenergy, sells domestic wind turbines for 695 pounds ($1,200) on its Web site (www.futurenergy.co.uk) and began shipping them four months ago. They now sell about 100 a week to customers all over the world, said director Peter Osborn.

OFF TOPIC> Prep Your Car for Winter. jes a few tips kiddies.
1. Check your anti-freeze. The best ratio of anti-freeze to water is
50/50. The number one cause of engine-related breakdowns is cooling
system failure. Prevent this by having your cooling system flushed
every two years.
2. Replace your windshield wiper blades twice a year. Fill the windshield
washer reservoir with freeze resistant wiper fluid (plain water and
standard windshield washer fluid will freeze) and keep an extra gallon
in the trunk.
3. Check your battery. If the battery is more than three years old, have
a technician test its capacity. Have the alternator tested at the same
time. Make sure the battery terminal ends are corrosion-free.
4. Check your tire pressure. Check the pressure when the tires are cold,
and set the pressure to the car manufacturer's recommendations for your
specific tires. When the weather turns cold, the air inside the tire
will contract and the pressure will drop.
5. Look at the tread depth on your tires. Put a penny headfirst between
the treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln's hair, it's time to
replace the tire.
6. Check your spare tire. Make sure it has the proper air pressure and
tread depth and that all the proper tire-changing equipment is in the
vehicle.
7. Check that your lights, heater, and defrosters are working properly.
8. Check all rubber hoses and belts to ensure they are not damaged.
Coolant hoses wear from the inside out. Inspect for heavy cracks or
chunking in the belts. Alternatively, have a professional inspect all
hoses and belts.
9. Have your car's brake system checked if you haven't had the system
inspected in the last six months.
10. Assemble a winter emergency kit for the trunk of your vehicle. It
should include a blanket, extra boots and gloves, an ice scraper,
windshield washer fluid, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, flares, a
small snow shovel, a flashlight, kitty litter (for traction when stuck
in the snow), and bottled water.

good morning all.
oil down a bit. plane crash in NYC had little effect on the market yesterday.
Commodities are poised to gain after the drop in AA since the cheap price of NG is good for the metals refining industry. I have a question. PDS the driller can pay out monthly with a nice dividend. Why can't US drillers give a better dividend. Could it be the high compensation paid exec's. I find it hard to believe that canadian drillers make more money for shareholders than US drillers or that they are that much more cost efficient.. There has to be a reason why PDS can pay unit holders like us so well while NBR,RDC,DO,RIG etc pay executives so well and pay such a small dividend to stock holders. any ideas would be appreciated. Mean while , we will be adding to PDS holdings for now. If IF IF N.korea keeps rattling sabres there could also be a very slight rise in precious metals. hedging the bets with a bit of silver for now. feel free to pass on the blog link to anyone you feel could be an asset and help us all to make a little money.. luck.

If IF IF N.korea keeps rattling sabres there could also be a very slight rise in precious metals. hedging the bets with a bit of silver for now. feel free to pass on the blog link to anyone you feel could be an asset and help us all to make a little money.. luck.
